Overview

  • To externally validate existing clinical decision rules (CDR) (NEXUS, Canadian, PECARN)
  • An exploratory analysis to determine whether a new or more refined CDR can be derived and validated to improve accurate detection of C-spine injury
  • To study the epidemiology and outcome of children with C-spine injury (CSI) in Australia & New Zealand

What do we need from you?

  1. Enrol all eligible patients
    • Inclusion Criteria
      • < 16 years old; and
      • Assessed for possible C-spine injury; or
      • Neck pain or tenderness after trauma; or
      • Considered at risk of CSI at triage or medical assessment
    • Exclusion criteria
      • Unable to consent or follow-up
      • Prior C-spine imaging at a non-participating centre
      • Penetrating trauma
  2. Fill in the case report form (CRF) 
    • Once completed, place in the SONIC draw of the research trolley
  3. Seek verbal consent for a phone call and/or text from the ED research nurse
