This page provides a quick guide to the SENTINEL study
What are we trying to find out?
- How many children in Australia and New Zealand develop community acquired sepsis
- What are the characteristics of severe paediatric sepsis in Australia and New Zealand (e.g. ICU, vasopressor use, other organ support, death, treatment variation, long term outcomes, demographics)
Inclusion Criteria
- Aged < 16 years old; AND
- Admission to hospital; AND
- At least one of any of the following:
- Diagnosis of suspected sepsis or septic shock; OR
- Treatment for infection with IV/IM/IO antibiotics AND IV fluid bolus or inotropic support
- Admission to ICU or HDU for treatment of severe infection
Exclusion Criteria
- Transferred from another hospital if >24 hours since initial presentation
- Transferred from another hospital ward to ED
- Patient presenting with trauma who receive antibiotics for prophylaxis or circulatory support for blood loss
What we require from you
- Ensure inclusion/exclusion criteria are met
- Get CRF 1 from Research trolley
- Fill in SENTINEL CRF 1
- Obtain verbal consent for follow-up from parents
- Provide information pamphlet to parents
- Return CRF to Research trolley
